Solar, explained

What to check before installing solar panels.

A useful solar quotation explains the complete project. Use this checklist to compare proposals and ask clearer questions before choosing equipment or paying an installation advance.

Cleaner energy
brighter tomorrows.

Check the property before choosing a capacity.

Ask how roof condition, structural suitability, shading, access and available space were assessed. The proposal should also consider recent electricity use and the connection details. A generic capacity recommendation is not a substitute for a site review.

Know exactly what equipment is included.

Compare like-for-like specifications instead of brand names alone. Keep a written record of the agreed components and any permitted substitutions.

  • Solar module manufacturer, model and rated capacity
  • Inverter model and whether the design includes backup
  • Mounting structure, electrical protection and earthing
  • Cabling, monitoring equipment and access arrangements

Separate included work from extra costs.

Ask which civil work, electrical alterations, permissions, meter charges, transport, taxes and handover documents are included. If programme benefits are mentioned, confirm eligibility and whether the quoted cost assumes a subsidy that has not yet been approved.

Read the warranties and service scope.

Panel product warranties, performance warranties, inverter cover and installation workmanship are different commitments. Confirm who provides each one, what exclusions apply and how a service request is made. Do not assume a manufacturer warranty pays for every visit or replacement cost.

Keep the handover documents.

Request the agreed equipment list, invoices, warranty documents, test and commissioning records, monitoring instructions and service contacts. Understand safe shutdown and fault-reporting instructions from the installer; electrical work should be handled by qualified professionals.

Your questions, answered.

What is the difference between a panel warranty and a performance warranty?

A product warranty concerns specified defects, while a performance warranty describes the manufacturer’s stated output commitment under its terms. The coverage, remedy and exclusions must be read in the actual warranty documents.

Should I choose the cheapest solar quote?

Compare the complete scope, specifications, installation standards and support obligations. A lower initial quote may exclude work or use different equipment, so price alone does not establish value.
